YEC Framework for 2007
Introduction: The following changes were proposed at our Youth Forum on the 4th December 2006 to enhance the running of the YEC.
- The YEC year runs from term 1 to term 4.
- Invite 4 members from each school – 2 to be permanent members and 2 rotating.
- A YEC executive would comprise President, Vice President, Secretary, Editor (newsletter), and Technology officer (website), Tertiary Representative, High School Representative and Primary School Representative. The executives to be from different schools.
- Term of office runs for the year – that’s is the same 2 permanent kids from the same school represents their school for the year.
- The AGM to be run week 5 term 1 and the executive decided upon.
- A district YEC meeting to run terms 2 and 3 week 5
- District meeting format would include games, District meeting, show and tell, guest speakers, and hands on activities, practical workshops. Activities may include tree propagation, Dune care, murals, petitions and streamwatch. Meetings will have a focus problem and a solution brainstormed. The Tree of Sustainability Strategic Plan will be demonstrated to assist schools to develop their SEMP. Schools in developing a SEMP may focus on the 9 key elements of:
- Water
- Transport and Air
- Community and Partnerships.
- Biodiversity and School Grounds.
- Energy
- Curriculum, learning and pedagogy.
- Green and Healthy Schools.
- Global Citizenship
- Litter and waste
- YEC to run a World Environment Day Expo term 2 week 6, for all schools to bring students. Run over 2 days – one for Primary (Kath Puddey to coordinate) and one for High (Ian Judd to coordinate). John McQueen from Cascade to assist. Focus on industry to come and present with workshops.
- YEC to run Youth Environmental Annual Conference in Term 4, week 5 for all schools to bring students – focus on students running workshops. Hands on activities like worm farming, paper making, Youth Parliament and school demonstrations.
- Schools to register for the YEC Sustainable Schools Network and receive a certificate recognizing this.
- The mascot for the YEC will be the Green tree Frog- Bob the Frog
- Shirts will be developed with a YEC Logo.
- A website, newsletter and YEC flyer to be developed.
- Movie nights to be publicised for schools to attend.
- Development of a YEC song or anthem.
- Gold coin donation at each meeting to go to an environmental charity.
- Each meeting to have a focus and theme linking in with an Environmental Partner.
